- Was the head of the Food Administration under President Wilson, directed relief to much of Europe

- One of America's most intelligent presidents (voted best engineer in the US along with Thomas Edison)
- Spoke fluent Chinese along with his wife Lou
- Spent his own money on entertainment in the White House and refused the traditional presidential salary
- Believed that people were responsible for their own success/failure (much of his belief led to how he reacted to the Great Depression)
